It’s behind the coffee...
That sits on a shelf-
I’ve been there in person
I’ve seen it myself!
They just walk around it
Like nobody cares,
Ignoring those dark and mysterious stairs
To the dungeon.

And so, while I linger here
Sipping my tea,
I can’t help but ponder
What reason there’d be
For a sweet, small cafe
So pleasant and charming
To have as it’s centerpiece,
Dark and alarming,
A portal that leads
To a dungeon!

I suppose it’d come in handy if
A patron thought his bill to stiff,
Or a cheapskate who leaves
A tip too small,
Or screaming children
And that’s not all-
I’ll bet that’s even where they choose
To toss those who enter
Without shirt or shoes,
And clumsy kids who spill their milk
They lock them and all
Their detestable ilk
In the dungeon!

Take heed,
All you artists of open mic-
Choose only the pieces
You think folks will like.
Carefully consider your hits and your misses
‘Cause here they don’t bother
With boos and hisses-
At the Conway Cafe
They’ll just show you the way
To the dungeon!

There's an open mic event every Wednesday evening at the Conway Cafe on Main Street in Conway, NH. The Cafe itself is rather quirky in terms of layout- having been retro-fitted into an old building block. At the center of the Cafe a stairway (surrounded on all sides by shelves, partitions, and a gate) leads down to what appears to be a dark and uninviting basement. This odd feature tickled my fancy, so I wrote a poem about it and read it at the open mic. It was very well recieved.

I can see why it was well received. Coffee and a great poem what more could one ask for. :D

All of which makes me anxious, at times unbearably so

I haven't commented on anything of yours...or much of anything at all...in ages, but this is very entertaining. Little shops always have fun quirks, but this one sounds very fun.

A nice, amusing piece.

Another amusing insight. I really do need to make sure I keep better watch on your stuff. It's great.

Thanks! It was a really fun poem to write and to read aloud.
